Aida L. Giachello, PhD

Aida L. Giachello is a Professor at Northwestern University, Department of Preventative Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine, in Chicago, Illinois. Prior to this position, she worked at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) for more than 25 years. In 1993, she established and served as the Director of the UIC, Midwest Latino Health Research, Training and Policy Center, where until December 2010, she conducted research on health disparities with a focus on diabetes, hypertension, asthma and cancer among other areas. At UIC she trained Latino/minority investigators and community health workers and engaged in policy work emerging from the research findings.

As a person living with diabetes, Giachello has been addressing diabetes disparities for more than 20 years advocating for diabetes prevention, control and more research. She has also served as a volunteer in the American Diabetes Association Chicago chapter and as a member of the Association's Latino Diabetes Action Council since its formation in 2005. Giachello holds a PhD in Medical Sociology from the University of Chicago, a MS in Social Services Administration from the University of Chicago and a BS in Social Sciences from the University of Puerto Rico.
