John W. Griffin, Jr., Chair of the Board

John W. Griffin‚ Jr. is Immediate Past Chair of the Board of the American Diabetes Association‚ the nation's largest voluntary health organization leading the fight to Stop Diabetes®. He is also Managing Partner of Marek‚ Griffin & Knaupp‚ a Victoria‚ Texas law firm.

His national service with the Association includes membership on the Board of Directors and chairing the Legal Advocacy Subcommittee‚ as well as serving on the Advocacy Committee‚ Finance Committee‚ Safe at School Task Force‚ and Legislative Subcommittee. In 2006 he received the Association's Addison B. Scoville Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. At the local level‚ he serves on the Texas Diabetes Council by appointment of the Governor of Texas. He is a member of the American Diabetes Association's Pinnacle Society and Summit Circle. These are recognition societies representative of individuals who are providing significant contributions to the Association through major gifts and their estate plans‚ respectively.

Griffin‚ in addition to raising funds for the American Diabetes Association‚ has successfully litigated many of the most important lawsuits involving discrimination against workers with diabetes‚ breaking down blanket bans that prevented people with diabetes from pursuing careers in law enforcement and other safety–sensitive jobs and developing nationwide standards for fair employment of workers with diabetes. He frequently lectures on employment law and legal ethics and is known as a vigorous defender of the rights of students and workers with disabilities. He also advocates for access to health care for people with diabetes.

Griffin earned his Juris Doctor Degree at the University Of Missouri School Of Law‚ Columbia, Missouri‚ and a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Austin College‚ Sherman, Texas.
