Karen D. Talmadge, PhD
Chair of the Board
Karen Talmadge is an entrepreneur and executive in the biomedical industry.
Dr. Talmadge has been an award-winning volunteer leader for the American Diabetes Association since 1993. She is inspired by her 22-year-old daughter who has had type 1 diabetes for 20 years. In addition to serving as Chair of the Board-Elect in 2012, she served a previous three-year term on the national board and she is serving as Vice Chair of the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation Board as well as Chair of the Pathway to Stop Diabetes initiative with a goal of funding 100 scientists in the next decade. She also served as Chair of the American Diabetes Association's Silicon Valley Community Leadership Board.
She is currently President of Nabu Health Care Consulting. She is also Chair of the Board of Directors of Gynesonics, and serves on the Boards of Directors of Amplyx Pharmaceuticals, Velocity Pharmaceutical Development and Venous Health Systems. In 2010, she retired as Vice President, Chief Science Officer, Kyphon Products, and Bakken Fellow, at Medtronic Spinal and Biologics, Sunnyvale, CA. She had joined Medtronic in 2007 when it acquired Kyphon Inc., a minimally-invasive spine company she co-founded and funded. Prior to Kyphon's acquisition, she served as a member of Kyphon's Board of Directors from the company's inception in 1994. She also served as Kyphon's Chief Science Officer since June 2003 and as its Executive Vice President since November 1998. In Kyphon's start-up phase from 1994 to 1998, she was the company's President, Chief Executive Officer and Treasurer. She also spent a decade in research and business roles at the biotechnology company, Scios Inc.
Talmadge received her PhD from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, and her A.B. from Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, PA.
