About Us

The Banting Medal for Scientific Achievement Award is our highest scientific award and honors an individual who has made significant, long term contributions to our understanding of diabetes, its treatment and/or prevention. The award is named after Nobel Prize winner Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin treatment for diabetes. This year's recipient is Robert A. Rizza, MD.

The Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award recognizes outstanding scientific achievement in the field of diabetes, taking into consideration independence of thought and originality. This year's recipient is Martin G. Myers, Jr., MD, PhD.

The Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award is presented to an individual who demonstrates significant contributions to the understanding of diabetes education, spent many years of effort in the field, and has benefited recipients of education. This year's recipient is Belinda P. Childs, ARNP, MN, CDE, BC-ADM.

The Kelly West Award is given in memory of Kelly West, widely regarded as the “father of diabetes epidemiology.” Each year, the award is given to an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of diabetes epidemiology, including scientific publications and teaching experience. This year's recipient is Frank B. Hu, MD, PhD.

The Outstanding Physician Clinician in Diabetes Award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding efforts in diabetes care and is recognized as a highly regarded clinician and educator with more than 10 years of distinguished service. This year's recipient is William V. Tamborlane, MD.

The Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes is named for Dr. Rifkin, former president of the American Diabetes Association. It is awarded to an individual whose outstanding service in the cause of diabetes has been performed with an international perspective and with international impact. This year's recipient is Peter H. Bennett, MB, ChB, FRCP, FFPH.

The Albert Renold Award is presented to an individual whose career is distinguished by outstanding achievements in the training of diabetes research scientists and the facilitation of diabetes research. This year's recipient is Philip E. Cryer, MD.

The medal honors individual excellence in wellness promotion and disease prevention. This year's recipient is Kelly J. Acton, MD, MPH, FACP, CAPT, USPHS.

This medal recognizes outstanding lifetime achievement in the cause of diabetes. This year's recipient is Stanley Panasewicz, CMA.

This medal recognizes outstanding service in the cause of diabetes. This year's recipient is Karen D. Talmadge, PhD.

This award honors an individual or group who significantly contributes to public policy to benefit people with diabetes and the American Diabetes Association's mission. This year's award goes to the Kapche Litigation Team, including Jeffrey S. Kapche, Katherine L. Butler, JD, James R. Gavin III, MD, PhD, Desmond A. Schatz, MD, Ralph A. DeFronzo, MD, and Garin Reetz.

This award honors an individual who significantly helps funding of diabetes research through targeted fund-raising efforts and/or gifts. This year's recipient is Ginger L. Graham, MBA.

This award acknowledges a member of the Board of Directors, or other volunteer, who has made an outstanding contribution to the American Diabetes Association. This year's recipient is Richard R. Rubin, PhD, CDE.

This award honors the President, Health Care & Education for outstanding leadership and service to the American Diabetes Association. This year's recipient is Christine T. Tobin, RN, MBA, CDE.

This medal honors the President, Medicine & Science for outstanding leadership and service to the American Diabetes Association. This year's recipient is Richard M. Bergenstal, MD.

This medal honors the Chair of the Board for outstanding leadership and service to the American Diabetes Association. This year's recipient is Nash M. Childs, PE.

This award honors the Secretary/Treasurer for outstanding leadership and service to the American Diabetes Association. This year's recipient is Gerard B. Nee, CPA.
