About Us

The Banting Medal for Scientific Achievement Award is the Association’s highest scientific award and honors an individual who has made significant, long-term contributions to our understanding of diabetes, its treatment and/or prevention. The award is named after Nobel Prize winner Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin treatment for diabetes.This year's recipient is Barbara E. Corkey, PhD.

The Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award recognizes outstanding scientific achievement in the field of diabetes, taking into consideration independence of thought and originality.This year's recipient is Matthias H. Tschoep, MD.

The Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award is presented to an individual who demonstrates significant contributions to the understanding of diabetes education, spent many years of effort in the field, and have benefited recipients of education.This year's recipient is Linda M. Siminerio, RN, PhD, CDE.

The Kelly West Award for Outstanding Achievement in Epidemiology is given in memory of Kelly West, widely regarded as the “father of diabetes epidemiology.” Each year, the award is given to an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of diabetes epidemiology, including scientific publications and teaching experience. This year's recipient is Frederick L. Brancati, MD, MHS, FACP.

The Outstanding Physician Clinician in Diabetes Award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding efforts in diabetes care and is recognized as a highly regarded clinician and educator with more than 10 years of distinguished service. This year's recipient is Jerry P. Palmer, MD.

The Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes honors individual outstanding service in the cause of diabetes that has been performed with an international perspective and with international impact.This year's recipient is Rury Holman, FRCP.

The Albert Renold Award is presented to an individual whose career is distinguished by outstanding achievements in the training of diabetes research scientists and the facilitation of diabetes research. This year's recipient is Robert S. Sherwin, MD.

The Behavioral Medicine and Psychology Interest Group Lecture Award for Distinguished Contributions recognizes a behavioral researcher who has made outstanding and/or innovative contributions in the study and understanding of behavioral aspects of diabetes. This year's recipient is Barbara J. Anderson, PhD.

The Edwin Bierman Lecture Award recognizes a leading scientist who has made outstanding contributions in the field of diabetes-related macrovascular complications and related risk factors. The award is supported by an endowment established in 1999 by Merck and Co., Inc. This year's recipient is Theodore Mazzone, MD, FACP.

The Roger Pecoraro Lecture Award recognizes a researcher who has made scientific contributions and demonstrates an untiring commitment to improving the understanding of the detection, treatment, and prevention of diabetic foot complications. It is supported by an educational grant from Curative Health Services, ConvaTec, Ortho McNeil-Pharmaceuticals, and Sechrist Clinical Services.This year's recipient is Robert G. Frykberg, DPM, MPH.

The Norbert Freinkel Lecture Award is given in memory of Norbert Freinkel, a dedicated and insightful investigator as well as gifted writer, to honor a researcher who has made outstanding contributions, including scientific publications and presentations, to the understanding and treatment of diabetes and pregnancy. This year's recipient is Peter Damm, MD.

This medal recognizes outstanding lifetime achivement in the cause of diabetes. This year's recipient is Darlene Cain.

This award honors an individual or group who significantly contributes to public policy to benefit people with diabetes and the American Diabetes Association's mission. This year's award goes to Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO).

This award acknowledges a member of the Board of Directors, or other volunteer, who has made an outstanding contribution to the American Diabetes Association. This year's recipient is Joseph A. Stankaitis, MD, MPH.

This medal honors the Chair of the Board for outstanding leadership and service to the American Diabetes Association. This year's recipient is John W. Griffin, Jr.

This award honors the President, Health Care & Education for outstanding leadership and service to the American Diabetes Association. This year's recipient is Elizabeth Mayer-Davis, MSPH, PhD, RD.

This medal honors the President, Medicine & Science, for outstanding leadership and service to the American Diabetes Association. This year's recipient is Robert R. Henry‚ MD.

This award honors the Secretary/Treasurer for outstanding leadership and service to the American Diabetes Association. This year's recipient is Dwight Holing.
