Outstanding Physician Clinician in Diabetes Award
Georgeanna J. Klingensmith, MD
The Outstanding Physician Clinician in Diabetes Award has been presented to Georgeanna J. Klingensmith, MD. Sponsored by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., this award is given to recognize an individual who has demonstrated exceptional efforts in providing care to patients with diabetes.
Currently a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver, Dr. Klingensmith is an expert in the area of health care systems for childhood diabetes, and she has contributed tremendously to improvements in outcomes and quality of care, as well as cost and insurability.
As director of pediatric endocrinology at The Children’s Hospital, Denver, Colorado and then director of pediatric services at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, Dr. Klingensmith established standards, trained generations of pediatric endocrinologists, and researched novel ways to improve outcomes. She was one of the lead authors of the Association’s statement “Care of Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes.”
Since 2002, Dr. Klingensmith has served on the Scientific Committee of the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD). She was one of the four editors of the ISPAD “Clinical Practice Consensus Guidelines,” currently the gold standard worldwide for pediatric diabetes.
For over 40 years, Dr. Klingensmith has improved the lives of children, adolescents, and young adults with diabetes. Her work with an estimated 9,000 families, hundreds of pediatric residents and fellows, and a large group of colleagues and peers has been marked by professionalism, warmth, and dedication.
