Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes
Pierre J. Lefèbvre, MD, PhD, FRCP, MAE
The Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes has been given to Pierre J. Lefèbvre, MD, PhD, FRCP, MAE. Supported by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the Harold Rifkin Award honors individual outstanding service in the cause of diabetes that has been performed with an international perspective and with international impact.
Currently emeritus professor of medicine in the Diabetes, Nutrition, and Metabolic Disorders Unit at the University of Liège, Belgium, Dr. Lefèbvre has worked throughout his career championing the cause of diabetes on a global basis.
As president of the International Diabetes Federation from 2003 to 2006, Dr. Lefèbvre worked diligently with all of the IDF regions, visiting over 50 countries, many in the developing world, educating both healthcare professionals and the public about diabetes. He was a founding member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and served as EASD president from 1989 to 1992. He has been president of the Global Diabetes Alliance from 2007 to 2010 and is currently chair of the board of the World Diabetes Foundation.
As chair of his department at the University of Liège, Dr. Lefèbvre has been a guiding force of Belgian diabetology. He has trained numerous fellows, who can now be found throughout the globe, in Central America, the Middle East, and Africa. He has served on the editorial boards of several journals. He was scientific editor at the International Diabetes Monitor for 15 years and was known for his critical eye and insistence on excellence.
