2013 Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award
The 2013 Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award has been given to Ann L. Albright, PhD, RD. Supported by an educational grant from Lilly USA, LLC, this award is presented to a distinguished health professional who has made outstanding educational efforts in the field of diabetes and has demonstrated significant contributions to the understanding of diabetes education.
Dr. Albright is currently the director of the Division of Diabetes Translation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta. As the first nonphysician to hold this position, she is unparalleled as an advocate for the role of diabetes educators in health care delivery and administration.
With her background in research, clinical care, and public health, Dr. Albright has contributed to a range of projects. She directed the diabetes program for the California Department of Health Services for many years. She served as an advisor to the U.S. Surgeon General on diabetes, obesity, nutrition, and physical activity. She led the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Diabetes Detection Initiative, coordinating and building consensus among government agencies, industry, and non-profit organizations.
Dr. Albright has promoted best practices in diabetes care to individuals, local communities, statewide organizations, and the federal government, and she is passionate about the importance of diabetes education and its efficient delivery across all sectors of society, particularly to those who have limited resources.
