M. Sue Kirkman‚ M.D., is Senior Vice President‚ Medical Affairs and Community Information‚ and Acting Chief Scientific & Medical Officer for the American Diabetes Association‚ the nation's largest voluntary health organization leading the fight to Stop Diabetes®.
Dr. Kirkman joined the Association in 2007 and has primary responsibility for the Association's Medical Affairs area‚ including oversight of the Professional Practice Committee and its clinical practice recommendations and consensus statements‚ which provide guidance and direction to health care professionals around the world. She oversees the Diabetes Education Recognition Program‚ youth strategies‚ prevention initiatives, as well as the Association's four professional journals and its consumer magazine. In addition‚ Dr. Kirkman supervises staff responsible for the medical accuracy of content found on the Association's website‚ in its many professional and consumer books‚ in brochures and booklets distributed by the Association’s Center for Information and Community Support.
As of July 15‚ 2011‚ Dr. Kirkman also serves as Acting Chief Scientific & Medical Officer. In this capacity‚ she provides leadership and oversight of scientific and medical activities including research‚ clinical affairs‚ program recognition and certification‚ medical information‚ and professional education. Dr. Kirkman also oversees the Association's support of a broad range of professional education activities including Scientific Sessions‚ the world's largest scientific meeting devoted to diabetes.
Prior to joining the American Diabetes Association‚ Dr. Kirkman was Associate Professor of Medicine at Indiana University‚ where she served as an active clinician and medical educator‚ directing the fellowship training program in Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr. Kirkman was also a clinical researcher in the field of prevention of diabetes and its complications and the improvement of the quality of diabetes care. In addition‚ she has served as an active physician volunteer with the American Diabetes Association‚ including membership on its Board of Directors and Professional Practice and Education Program Recognition Committees. She was also a member on the editorial board of Diabetes Care and Editor–in–Chief of the Association's consumer periodical‚ Diabetes Forecast.
Dr. Kirkman received her medical degree from the University of North Carolina and completed postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at the University of Utah and in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Duke University.
