President, Medicine & Science
Richard M. Bergenstal, MD is President, Medicine & Science of the American Diabetes Association, the nation’s largest voluntary health organization leading the fight to Stop DiabetesSM. He is also Executive Director of the International Diabetes Center at Park Nicollet in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Clinical Professor for the Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota.
Bergenstal has dedicated more than 30 years of his career to making life better for people with diabetes by focusing on patient-centered team care and clinical research exploring the link between glucose control and diabetes complications. He currently serves as Principal Investigator on two NIH trials, EDIC, the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) follow-up study and the Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) trial. His most recent efforts have concentrated on translating new research and education findings into practice. In addition to studying the best systems for delivering quality diabetes care, he continues to explore the value of glucose monitoring, incretin therapy and insulin therapy in T2DM and insulin pump/sensor therapy in T1DM. He has served on the American Diabetes Association’s National Board of Directors and the Scientific Sessions Planning, Programs, and Government Relations committees. He has also served as Chair of the Association’s Professional Section Interest Group on Clinical Endocrinology, Health Care Delivery and Public Health.
In addition, he has served in a number of Association leadership positions in Minnesota. Among the numerous awards he has received, he was honored as the American Diabetes Association’s Outstanding Physician Clinician in 2007, the Minnesota Health Award in 2004 and the Charles H. Best Medal for Distinguished Service in 1994, as co-investigator of the Diabetes Control and Complication Trial.
Bergenstal graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from the University of Florida and earned his medical degree and did his endocrinology fellowship at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology.
