How to Take Action - Work Laws
Goals:
- To be able to have any job that you are otherwise qualified for
- To have any reasonable accommodations necessary to protect your health on the job
Resolving Problems:
- Educate
- Negotiate
- Litigate
- Legislate
Who can an employee facing discrimination go to?
- Work your way up the employer's chain of command
- Employer's Equal Employment Opportunity Office (if there is one)
- Outside sources of pressure (media, elected officials)
- Appropriate government Equal Employment Opportunity agency (Federal and/or State)
What information should the employee gather?
- Documents specific to the employment problem
- General policy documents (employer's policies, state and federal laws and regulations)
- Policies of similar employers
- Medical information including statements from the employee's doctor
- Detailed notes of everything that happens (including accommodations requested)
