How to Take Action - Work Laws


Goals:


  • To be able to have any job that you are otherwise qualified for
  • To have any reasonable accommodations necessary to protect your health on the job

Resolving Problems:


  • Educate
  • Negotiate
  • Litigate
  • Legislate

Who can an employee facing discrimination go to?


  • Work your way up the employer's chain of command
  • Employer's Equal Employment Opportunity Office (if there is one)
  • Outside sources of pressure (media, elected officials)
  • Appropriate government Equal Employment Opportunity agency (Federal and/or State)

What information should the employee gather?


  • Documents specific to the employment problem
  • General policy documents (employer's policies, state and federal laws and regulations)
  • Policies of similar employers
  • Medical information including statements from the employee's doctor
  • Detailed notes of everything that happens (including accommodations requested)
