Children with diabetes sue school districts, state for assistance; denial of glucose monitoring and insulin administration during the school day challenged (PDF)
On October 11, 2005, the American Diabetes Association, with four elementary school-age students, filed an unprecedented civil rights complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, contending that two California school districts and the California Board of Education failed to provide proper care at school for students with diabetes. The lawsuit is part of the Association's Safe at School Campaign.

Glucagon Administration in Nevada Schools
At its March 16, 2005 meeting, the Nevada State Nursing Board added glucagon to the list of medications and procedures that a school nurse can delegate to other school personnel. The Board agreed to add glucagon to the list of medicines and procedures that a school nurse can delegate to other school staff. This procedure is added to the list which already included blood/urine glucose testing, calculation and verification of insulin dosages for self-administration, and use of automatic devices for fixed dosage injection, which includes insulin pens and pumps.

A school nurse in Nevada can now delegate to a school employee and train that employee to recognize when glucagon is needed and to give the glucagon to a child who undergoes a severe low blood sugar. The trained school personnel are designated as a "qualified person."
