ADA's Statement on AFT

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is very disappointed with the American Federation of Teachers' (AFT)opposition to the training and use of non-medical personnel to provide routine or emergency care to students with diabetes. The Association believes this position is short-sighted and works against the health and safety of students with diabetes. The care provided by trained non-medical personnel does not replace the care provided by a school nurse, but supplements school nurse care which is absolutely critical for a child with diabetes. This model is already working in communities and towns across the country.

The Association will continue to work with AFT and other nurse and teacher organizations, as well as with school nurses and teachers in our communities, and, most importantly, with parents and children across the country to ensure appropriate diabetes care is provided and that kids with diabetes are safe in school.
