New Mexico

The following information details health insurance and assistance programs available to uninsured people in New Mexico. If you currently have health insurance or have just lost health insurance coverage within the past 60 days, visit the health insurance section of our Web site for options available to you.

New Mexico Division of Insurance(800) 947-4722 or (505) 827- 4601
In general, residents of New Mexico can be turned down for a health insurance policy that you purchase on your own (an individual health insurance policy) based on the health conditions you may have. This is called medical underwriting. In most cases, diabetes is considered an “uninsurable” condition. Even though you can be turned down for an individual policy in New Mexico, a job-based health insurance policy can never turn you down for coverage because of your health conditions.

If you are having a problem with your state-regulated health plan and you are unable to resolve it with the plan directly, file a complaint with the Division of Insurance. They may be able to provide you with assistance in reaching a conclusion.

New Mexico Health Insurance Alliance - (800) 204-4700
If you are a self-employed individual without employees, you can purchase a small group health insurance plan through the New Mexico Health Insurance Alliance. You are eligible only if you are purchasing coverage for yourself and at least one additional family member. The Alliance can exclude pre-existing conditions for up to six months. Please contact the Alliance for more information.

New Mexico Medicaid - (505) 827-7750
Medicaid is available to anyone who meets income and eligibility criteria. Even if your income meets the criteria, you must fall into one of the eligibility categories in order to qualify. Contact your state Medicaid program for more information.

New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool (NMMIP)(800) 432-0750
The New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool is the New Mexico state high-risk pool. This program allows individual health insurance policies to be sold to people who might otherwise be considered “uninsurable” because of a chronic illness. Premiums may be high, and a pre-existing condition period may apply. Contact NMMIP for more information.

New MexiKids - State Children’s Health Insurance Program - (888) 997-2583
New MexiKids is the health insurance program designed to provide coverage to children and teens under age 19 whose families may have too great an income to qualify for Medicaid, but who may not be able to afford health insurance. To find out if you or your child meets the income guidelines, contact New MediKids.

New Mexico State Coverage Insurance  - 1-800-204-4700
New Mexico recently created a health insurance program for the uninsured, self-employed, and small businesses. Health insurance coverage is available to individuals between the ages of 19 and 64 and you cannot be turned down because you have a chronic illness like diabetes. You must meet certain income criteria in order to be eligible. Please contact the New Mexico State Coverage Insurance program for more information.

If you or your loved one is unable to see a physician due to the cost of care, there may be a local community health clinic in your area. These clinics generally are free to patients or require a very small fee. Find a clinic in your area.
