Lawyers Wanted & Needed

A seven year-old girl experiences a life-threatening severe low blood sugar level at school and no one is trained to help her.

A job applicant mentions his type 1 diabetes at a pre-employment physical and the doctor tells him he won't be hired.

A teenager acting disoriented as a result of a low blood sugar reaction is thrown in jail because police assume she is drunk. She is refused access to her blood glucose meter, insulin, food and medical attention.

These are all too-common examples of the discrimination faced by people with diabetes in the work force, schools, and many other aspects of their lives.

The American Diabetes Association is committed to fight-and to end-this discrimination. You can join our fight to provide effective legal counsel for people who face diabetes related discrimination. Contact Steve Bieringer at sbieringer@diabetes.org for more information.

ADA's Advocacy Attorney Network

Any attorney concerned about the legal rights of people with diabetes should be part of The American Diabetes Association's Advocacy Attorney Network. Expertise in discrimination law is less important than a passion to fight discrimination based on diabetes.

Each month, over three hundred people from around the country contact the Association seeking help on discrimination matters. While the most common requests concern problems in employment and education, other problems involve police custody, correctional institutions, licensing, and places of public accommodations.

The Association provides comprehensive materials to help these people understand their legal rights and how to pursue remedies. Since a good deal of the discrimination is based upon ignorance of diabetes and modern diabetes management, our strategy is to start by education and, when needed, move on to negotiation. When legal action is required to resolve a problem the Association helps people with diabetes find lawyers. The Association has also been both a party plaintiff and an amicus curiae in key lawsuits. And where laws stand in the way of fairness for people with diabetes the Association initiates -- and has passed -- legislation on the federal and state levels. Network attorneys assist all of these efforts through pro bono representation or in the regular course of their practice.

Attorney Materials
Our goal is to provide lawyers with the resources they need to successfully help people fight discrimination based on diabetes. We do this through consultation on cases, our extensive on-line Attorney Materials Bank, and through a listserv that enables network lawyers to offer each other help and advice, as well as to provide updates on national ADA legal advocacy efforts.
