State Legislation

Advocacy plays an integral role in American Diabetes Association's work to fulfill its mission. Our advocacy presence can be felt in the nation's capital and in every state of the union.

Our efforts in state government affairs have led to major improvements in health insurance coverage for people with diabetes, improved care for children with diabetes in schools, adoption of programs to fund diabetes research and policies to improve fitness and reduce obesity among our nation's youth.

Through the combined strength of our grassroots network and the expertise of scientific and medical volunteers, the American Diabetes Association has become the leading organization fighting to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

The Association is essential to building public support for and awareness of diabetes. Our advocacy efforts work to improve health care, fight discrimination and increase the federal and state commitment to diabetes. Through its lobbying and advocacy efforts at the state level, the American Diabetes Association is the leading organization, fighting to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

Health Insurance in Your State
If you are having trouble getting or keeping health insurance, our state health insurance pages may help! Find out what health insurance programs exist in your state and how to contact them.

Expanding Health Coverage & Fighting Rollbacks
Successfully managing diabetes without comprehensive health insurance coverage is impossible. Americans with diabetes lacking comprehensive health coverage run a higher risk of developing diabetes related complications.

Preserving Medicaid Benefits
Medicaid coverage of diabetes needs makes managing the disease affordable for children and low income American families.

Funding Diabetes Control Programs
American Diabetes Association encourages state legislators to increase funding for the CDC Diabetes Prevention and Control Programs in their state to expand their existing prevention and treatment efforts.

Diabetes Care in Schools
The Association is advocating for the passage of legislation to make sure students with diabetes are medically safe and have equal access to education

Stem Cell Research
The American Diabetes Association supports stem cell research while strongly opposing reproductive cloning. We will continue to support legislation and proposals that enhance funding for stem cell research at the federal and state levels.

Reducing Obesity and Preventing Diabetes in Schools
ADA encourages all state legislators to support the Overweight and Obesity Legislative Task Force recommendations, which include improving school nutrition programs, eliminating vending machines, increasing physical fitness opportunities, and developing appropriate screening programs.
