Preventing Diabetes with Good Nutrition
Healthy eating is essential for both children and adults in order to curb obesity and avoid type 2 diabetes and its many related complications. A healthy diet is one that is high in nutrients with a moderate number of calories per serving. Many American diets exceed the recommended number of calories per day and lack the recommended number of nutrients.
In recent years Congress and the Administration have worked to update the nutritional standards of foods served in schools. Schools are now serving healthier meals that meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans through the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Programs. Healthy standards for all snacks and beverages sold in schools are also in place. Our goal is for all children to have access to the foods that allow them to get the recommended daily requirements of nutrients. In addition, in the near future, chain restaurants with 20 or more locations will be required to post calorie information for the food they serve, helping consumers make healthy choices.
