Expanding Health Coverage and Fighting State Rollbacks
Unlike many other diseases, diabetes is largely self-managed. In order to stay healthy, people with diabetes must carefully manage their blood glucose levels. This requires having access to medications, training, and supplies like blood glucose monitors and test strips.
Through the efforts of our Diabetes Advocates, 46 states and the District of Columbia require state-regulated health insurance plans to cover basic diabetes supplies and education.
While we continue to fight to enact similar health insurance legislation in the four remaining states, we also face attempts to roll back or eliminate existing health insurance benefits. Last year, over 20 states considered diabetes coverage roll back provisions; however, we have successfully led the fight against such efforts.
We encourage all state legislators to oppose efforts to eliminate or reduce diabetes coverage. We also urge legislators to oppose the enactment of association health plans and multiple employer welfare arrangements that will remove diabetes coverage requirements from these health plans.
