| Steps to Happiness |
 |
| The results of a recent poll show that people with type 1 diabetes
can be happy! But it doesn't happen right away. Justin, 24, was
angry when he found out he had diabetes. Treatment was a challenge,
and he knew life would never be the same. He also worried about
health problems and wasn't sure how to take care of himself. Experts
say these feelings are normal when people are faced with a serious
problem. The good news? Justin found that he could cope with his
diabetes as he learned more about it. You can, too! |

Matching insulin to food can help you manage your blood sugar
more easily. Most people need 1 to 2 units of rapid-acting
(lispro) or short-acting (regular) insulin for every 15 grams
of carbohydrate (for example, the amount in a small apple).
Work with your dietitian or nurse to set up a plan for counting
carbohydrates. Carb counting can mean more blood sugar checks
and thinking about what you eat. But it can also give you
more options for meal planning and food choices.
