People with Type 2 Diabetes Need Changes in Treatment over Time
Things change. It's part of life. When you first learned you had type 2 diabetes, you may have changed how much you ate or started taking walks to keep your blood sugar in your target range. As time goes on, you may need diabetes pills or insulin shots too. That doesn't mean your diabetes is getting worse. It just means that the old plan isn't working now. Changing your treatment plan can help you reach your blood sugar goals.

Some people blame themselves when they find out they need a change in their diabetes care plan. They wonder if they did something wrong -- or didn't do enough. When you first got type 2 diabetes, your body still made some insulin but didn't use it well. This is called insulin resistance (ree-ZIS-tance). Over time, your body may make less insulin. Or your body may become less able to use insulin. You might need a new care plan. It's like taking a different road to get to the same place. Talk with your health care team about how new treatments can help.
