Keeping Blood Sugar Near Your Target Can Help Reduce Your Risk for Diabetes Complications
You can delay or prevent long-term problems from diabetes by keeping your blood sugar in your target range. You can find out how close you are to your blood sugar target two ways.

Check your blood sugar yourself with a blood sugar meter. You'll get a snapshot of your blood sugar at that moment.

Ask your health care provider to check your A-1-C (A-one-see) at least twice a year. It's a blood sugar check "with a memory." It tells you your average blood sugar for the past 2 to 3 months.

You might worry about getting long-term diabetes problems. Lots of people feel this way. Some also feel guilty, sad, or angry. Maybe you're feeling depressed about having diabetes. If you've been depressed for more than two weeks or if you feel like you can't cope, talk with a counselor or your health care team. Joining a support group helps some people. Others use exercise, prayer, or meditation to cope. Medicines can help, too.
