1989

  • All 56 ADA affiliates across the country conduct American Diabetes Alert Day activities on March 21, 1989.

  • “Be Alert to What You Eat and Do” Diaries are introduced to provide helpful tips about nutrition, calorie information, healthy eating, and exercise tips.

  • American Diabetes Alert Day seminars are held in 13 cities.

  • ADA American Diabetes Alert Day materials are distributed by AARP Pharmacies, WalMart Pharmacies and Medicine Shoppes.

  • Westin Hotels print and distribute over 14,000 copies of the ADA’s Alert Day materials to their employees.

  • ADA President Charles M. Clark, Jr., MD, appears on Good Morning America.

 

ADA Affiliates continue to engage in local market activities:

  • New Mexico ADA conducts a telephone-a-thon

  • Oklahoma ADA distributes nearly 120,000 sets of Alert Day materials statewide. One company discovers that as many as 10 workers might have diabetes and referrals are made for further evaluation.

  • Texas ADA works to distribute the Diabetes Risk Test to independent pharmacies and work with school systems to develop educational programs. Nearly 75,000 Spanish-language risk tests are distributed.

  • Clerks at Martin’s Foods Stores in Vermont drop ADA’s “Be Alert” diaries into grocery bags. The Chittendon Trust Company distributes ADA Diabetes Risk Tests in all bank statements, reaching nearly 30,000 households.
