In December 2006, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) passed a landmark Resolution recognizing diabetes as a chronic, debilitating and costly disease. The Resolution designates World Diabetes Day as a United Nations Day to be observed every year on November 14 starting in 2007.
The UN Resolution on Diabetes invites supporters to fight the diabetes epidemic through public awareness and the development of policies for the prevention, treatment, and care of the disease. Prior to the official designation by the UN, the International Diabetes Federation — of which the American Diabetes Association is a member — had been observing World Diabetes Day at a global level since 1991, with co-sponsorship of the World Health Organization.
Worldwide, more than 246 million people suffer from diabetes and the total
will increase to 380 million by 2020.
The United Nations General Assembly has designated the current World Diabetes
Day, November 14, as a United Nations Day, to be observed every year beginning
in 2007; and
The United Nations invites governmental and non-governmental organizations
to observe World Diabetes Day in order to raise public awareness of diabetes
and its related complications
