What is your cardiometabolic health?

Your cardiometabolic health is a measure of your risk for diabetes and heart disease and is a good gauge of your overall health. Cardiometabolic health is determined by a set of conditions known as cardiometabolic risk factors. Keeping an eye on these risk factors can help you avoid diabetes and heart disease and live a longer, better life.

Cardiometabolic risk factors include:

  • Overweight / obesity
  • High blood glucose
  • Cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Physical inactivity
  • Age
  • Race
  • Gender
  • Family history

Taking care of cardiometabolic risk factors means you are committed to seeing the big picture when it comes to your overall health. It means working with your doctor to take a careful look at your risk for diabetes and heart disease. Your risk includes factors you can control, such as exercising and smoking, and those that are out of your control, like age and family history. Once you understand your risk, you can start making changes to improve your cardiometabolic health.

Time for a CheckUp

Before you start on any health or fitness plan, you should see your doctor for a check up. A check up can help you monitor all your risk factors, giving you a total picture of your health from blood pressure to your family history. Your doctor can also help you decide what changes will have the biggest effect on your health. You'll probably want to make some lifestyle changes, perhaps to your diet and exercise habits. And that's not always easy, so start small. Keep reading for ideas.
