Hearing Loss: Another Complication of Diabetes

Diabetes and hearing impairment in the United States: audiometric evidence from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999 to 2004, by Kathleen E. Bainbridge and colleagues. Annals of Internal Medicine 149:1-10, 2008

What is the problem and what is known about it so far?

High blood glucose levels from uncontrolled diabetes, over time, can damage the small blood vessels of the body. This is what causes the eye, kidney, and nerve diseases that are common complications of diabetes. Hearing also depends on small blood vessels and nerves, and some people think diabetes may cause ear damage and hearing loss, as well. Previous studies have suggested that this is true, but it has not been proven.

Why did researchers do this particular study?

The researchers wanted to find out if people with diabetes have hearing problems more often than people in the general public.

Who was studied?

The study included more than 5,100 adults who had hearing tests performed as part of a large nationwide health study in the United States. Some of the participants had diabetes, and others did not.

How was the study done?

All participants had their hearing tested. The researchers collected information about their general health, diabetes, and other conditions that could affect hearing.

What did the researchers find?

People with diabetes were much more likely to have hearing loss than those without diabetes. The higher risk of hearing loss in people with diabetes did not seem to be related to other common causes of hearing loss.

What were the limitations of the study?

The study did not identify which type of diabetes participants had. Also, it relied on patients to report that they had diabetes. Testing the patients for diabetes may have been more accurate.

What are the implications of the study?

People with diabetes commonly have hearing problems and might benefit from testing and treatment.
