What is Cardiometabolic Risk?

Cardiometabolic health is a measure of a person's risk for diabetes and heart disease and is a good gauge of overall health. Cardiometabolic health is determined by a set of conditions known as cardiometabolic risk factors. Keeping an eye on these risk factors can help a person avoid diabetes and heart disease and live a longer, better life.

The Cardiometabolic Risk Initiative is a national effort to encourage health care providers to focus on the prevention, recognition and treatment of all risk factors for type 2 diabetes and heart disease.  Cardiometabolic risk factors are good indicators of your patients' overall risk of developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Cardiometabolic risk factors include:

Factors Contributing to Cardiometabolic RiskEach of these risk factors pose a danger to good health, and the more your patients have the greater their risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Through a variety of educational and public awareness activities, the American Diabetes Association is working to educate patients about their cardiometabolic risk factors, helping them learn more about their risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease so they can take action to lower their risk. First things first: We're encouraging patients to talk to their Doctor, Nurse Practitioner, or Physicians Assistant about their risk.
