Case Study: Mr. Rodriguez & Cardiovascular Disease
Objectives
Upon completion of this case study, the participant should be able to address the following aspects of treating a Latino patient recently diagnosed with diabetes:
- Assess the patient's clinical needs
- Recognize the cultural considerations of treating a Latino patient
- Determine appropriate pharmacological interventions
- Provide appropriate resources to overcome the cultural barriers faced by this patient
- Implement new treatment and counseling office protocols to use with Latino patients
Mr. Rodriguez is a 46-year-old male smoker with a history of hypertension. He was admitted to the emergency room with new-onset prolonged chest pain. Several members of his family have type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Mr. Rodriguez is self-employed and does not have health insurance.
An initial physical examination reveals the following information:
- Height = 5' 6"
- Weight = 220 pounds
- BMI = 35.5
- Waist Circumference = 44 inches
- Blood Pressure = 156/94
- Heart Rate = 92/minute
