November 17, 2009 American Diabetes Association Convenes 3rd Annual Disparities Conference Alexandria, VA – The American Diabetes Association, the nation’s leading voluntary health organization in the fight against diabetes, is bringing together community leaders from around the country for a two-day meeting to discuss major challenges, and to share ‘promising practices’ to address health disparities faced by minority populations when it comes to the prevention, detection, and management of obesity and type 2 diabetes. The meeting will take place November 18-19 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, in Arlington, VA. “When it comes to the impact of diabetes and obesity in minority populations, the statistics are daunting,” said Sue McLauglin, BS, RD, CDE, CPT, President, Health Care & Education, American Diabetes Association. “The challenges are great, but the urgency to stop diabetes and obesity is even greater. We are convening this forum to exchange best practices and to foster collaboration in our attempt to identify solutions and actions that will eliminate disparities in health care at the community level.” The American Diabetes Association Disparities Partnership Forum will include an opening keynote address from Garth Graham, MD, MPH, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of Minority Health, promising practice presentations, idea exchanges, and a closing keynote address from Dr. Kyu Rhee, Chief Public Health Officer, Health Resources and Services Administration.

Results from the Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study (DPPOS) indicate that lifestyle intervention reduced the onset of type 2 diabetes by 34 percent compared with placebo.
