Virginia Peragallo-Dittko, APRN, BC-ADM, MA, CDE, Receives American Diabetes Association’s Distinguished Achievement Award

Peragallo-Dittko Presented with Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award

The American Diabetes Association (ADA), the nation’s leading voluntary health organization in the fight against diabetes, announced today that Virginia Peragallo-Dittko, APRN, BC-ADM, MA, CDE, received the Association's prestigious Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award at the organization’s 67th Scientific Sessions and National Leadership Meeting, which was held June 22-26 in Chicago, IL.

The Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award was established to stimulate, acknowledge, and reward outstanding educational efforts by health professionals in the field of diabetes. "On behalf of the American Diabetes Association, we are delighted to present this prestigious award to Ms. Virginia Peragallo-Dittko," said Richard R. Rubin PhD, President, Health Care and Education, of the American Diabetes Association. “Her efforts to help educate people with diabetes about managing their diabetes and leading a healthier life directly supports ADA’s mission to improve the quality of lives of all people affected by diabetes.”


Ms. Peragallo-Dittko is the Director of the Diabetes Education Center at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, New York. The Diabetes Education Center offers comprehensive education and support to adults and children with diabetes and pre-diabetes. She is also part of the clinical faculty in the graduate departments of City University of New YorkHunter-Bellevue School of Nursing, Molloy College Department of Nursing, and Adelphi University School of Nursing.


Ms. Peragallo-Dittko is a member of several professional diabetes organizations, including the American Diabetes Association, American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), and Metropolitan New York Association of Diabetes Educators. She has authored over 60 books, book chapters, articles, and abstracts on diabetes management, and is currently serving as the Editor-in-Chief of Program Publications for the ADA.


Ms. Peragallo-Dittko received her master’s degree in Delivery of Nursing Services from New York University and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the 1990 Diabetes Educator of the Year from AADE and the 2002 Diabetes Educator of the Year from the Metropolitan New York Association of Diabetes Educators.


More than 15,000 top scientists, physicians and other health care professionals from around the world shared cutting-edge research, treatment recommendations and advances toward a cure for diabetes at the Association's 67th Scientific Sessions in Chicago, IL.


Diabetes is a serious disease that affects the body’s ability to produce or respond properly to insulin, a hormone that allows blood sugar to enter the cells of the body and be used for energy. Nearly 21 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. And, at least another 54 million have pre-diabetes. Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of death by disease in the United States and it has no cure.
