The American Diabetes Association is pleased to announce the launch of Diabetes 24/7, a new online application using personal health records that will allow people living with diabetes to manage their condition and share valuable health information with others on their care team. Diabetes 24/7 is designed to provide users with tools to help monitor their diabetes and to track data such as blood glucose patterns, laboratory results and physical activity sessions. The application will integrate with Microsoft’s HealthVault program and utilize its data sharing capability.
Diabetes is a growing epidemic and is taking a devastating physical, emotional and financial toll on our country. Recent estimates project that as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes by 2050 unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes®. Diabetes management is not solely done through visits to physicians, but also requires the person with diabetes to make day-to-day and often hour-to-hour decisions about treating blood glucose, exercise and healthy eating. The data that needs to be tracked by people with diabetes and their health care team can be enormous. Diabetes 24/7 is a unique application for individuals with diabetes to organize and act on information either through the application directly or generating printable reports based on their records for better care coordination.
“Nearly 26 million people are living with diabetes and another 79 million are estimated to have prediabetes. To stop this epidemic, we must provide innovative tools for people to effectively manage their condition,” said Dwight Holing, Secretary/Treasurer, American Diabetes Association. “Diabetes 24/7 allows users to upload and input critical health parameters and provides tools that are essential to proper diabetes care and treatment.”
Diabetes 24/7, developed with support from Microsoft, is a web-based platform that allows for free, seamless and secure tracking and sharing of medical information. The application serves as a portal for personal health information and provides the ability to transmit and share data from HealthVault enabled devices such as pedometers, blood pressure monitors and blood glucose meters, to aid in the management of diabetes. Diabetes 24/7 will also seamlessly integrate information from other HealthVault applications so that users only have to download or input blood pressure results once. The application will also serve as a communications channel for the Association to provide valuable content and health management materials since Diabetes 24/7 users will have access to diabetes.org and additional Association resources.
