Cycling to Help Stop Diabetes
The American Diabetes Association Kicks Off Its 20th Annual Tour de Cure Cycling Even
703-549-1500 ext. 3425
The American Diabetes Association is challenging riders to be part of the movement to Stop Diabetes® by participating in the 20th annual Tour de Cure®, a cycling event to raise funds to help fight diabetes. More than 50,000 cyclists are expected to participate in the Tour de Cure at sites throughout the country in 2011. All funds raised at the Tour de Cure events will go to support the Association's mission -- to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
Individuals and teams composed of co-workers, family and friends are taking the ride of their life and helping raise funds to change the future of diabetes for the nearly 26 million Americans with the disease. Tour de Cure is designed for everyone from the occasional bike rider to the experienced cyclist with routes ranging from 5-mile family rides to 100-mile “century” rides and more. Routes vary by location—visit www.diabetes.org/tour for more information about the Tour near you. All Tour de Cure events feature rest stops with great food to fuel the journey, volunteers to cheer riders on, and any mechanical support needed along the way. Everyone will return to enjoy the finish line festivities including a delicious lunch, entertainment and more!
“We are excited that this is the 20th year of the Tour de Cure, which is truly a celebration of health for anyone who is taking charge and helping to change the future of diabetes," said Mari Ruddy. Mari is a Colorado Tour de Cure rider, the founder of the Red Rider program and the founder of Team WILD: Women Inspiring Life with Diabetes. Mari has lived with type 1 diabetes for almost 30 years. “The Tour is a ride for any individual or team who wants to enjoy a great day of cycling and, at the same time, help stop this deadly disease. I know how important it is to stay healthy and cycling is one way to do that. What better way to spend a day than cycling with your friends, family or co-workers,” she said.
Red Rider Program
If you have diabetes and plan to ride in Tour de Cure, we invite you to join the Red Riders, a program created by the American Diabetes Association to recognize participants who have diabetes. You are why we ride!
“The Red Rider program, which is celebrating its fifth year, is a way for those of us with diabetes to gather the strength, courage and motivation to live well all the other days of the year when we aren’t riding in Tour de Cure,” says Mari. “It gives us an opportunity to celebrate the hard work, dedication and teamwork it takes to manage this challenging and complex disease. Best of all, when we can give a participant a red jersey that proclaims with joy, ‘I ride with diabetes!’ it brings a face to the disease with the heart, soul and passion of the participants who are riding with diabetes.”
