Diabetes Forecast Magazine Celebrates Diabetes Victories
Victory can take many shapes in the fight against diabetes, from overcoming daily food temptations to making it as a professional basketball player. Diabetes Forecast, the consumer magazine of the American Diabetes Association, offers many such stories in its March issue.
Forward Motion: NBA player Gary Forbes didn’t broadcast his type 1 diabetes when he was first diagnosed as a college student. But now the Toronto Raptors forward considers it part of his personal and professional identity—and hopes others do, too. The magazine takes a look at how Forbes manages his diabetes on and off the court, as well as his recent work with the Association to raise awareness of type 2 diabetes among African Americans and young people.
From One to the Next: Pancreas transplants have been around for almost half a century, but the past decade has seen dramatic improvements in this surgical solution to diabetes management, reserved for those who have exceptional difficulty managing their disease. Diabetes Forecast explores the advances that have allowed more people to stay diabetes-free and healthy longer.
Temptation Strikes: Humans are programmed to crave the trifecta of fat, salt and sugar—and the food industry knows just how to keep them coming back for more. This article looks at how to end the mindless eating that leads to overweight and obesity.
Caregiver Confidential: This brand-new column, for people who help take care of those with diabetes, explores ways to provide a support system when a loved one seems to be ignoring his or her self-care.
Making Strides: It’s easy to dismiss, but walking is one of the easiest and most cost-effective forms of exercise and provides many health benefits, among them a lowered risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and dementia. The magazine lists four ways to get more blood glucose–lowering power out of a simple walking workout, plus tips for proper form.
Kind-to-Kidneys Meal Planning: People with diabetes are used to meal plans that count carbohydrates and saturated fat, but kidney disease adds to the foods-to-monitor list. A renal meal plan can help make treatments more effective; this article outlines several important nutrients to consider and how to customize your eating plan for kidney health.
Additional exciting features and columns in the March 2012 issue of Diabetes Forecast include:
- Superfood recipes starring vitamin-rich spring greens.
- Understanding morning blood glucose highs and tips for overcoming them.
- Makeover favorite: The Diabetes Forecast food editor presents better-for-you banana bread.
- Studying women’s genes to unravel the relationship between diabetes and polycystic ovary syndrome, plus better ways to treat PCOS.
