The fight to Stop Diabetes® is an enormous one: It means treating, preventing and ultimately curing the disease; raising awareness and funding for research; providing much-needed services and information; and advocating on behalf of those denied their rights because of diabetes. From supporting innovative research to defending the legal rights of workers with diabetes, the May issue of Diabetes Forecast, the Healthy Living Magazine of the American Diabetes Association, describes the many ways people around the country are boldly striving to Stop Diabetes.
So You Want to Be a Scientist: Grants allow a researcher to purchase laboratory equipment, employ support staff and students and buy other supplies necessary to carry out groundbreaking studies—but the competition for government dollars can be brutal. This piece tells the stories of five researchers who received awards from the Association at critical moments in their careers and now work each day to improve the lives of people with diabetes.
Officers and Gentlemen: Shane Siegel and James Allman-Gulino wanted nothing more than to serve as U.S. diplomats—but they were both denied entry into the Foreign Service because of their type 1 diabetes, despite having excellent blood glucose control and surviving the agency’s rigorous selection process. The magazine looks at how these men fought back with help from two of the Association’s volunteer attorneys, demonstrating that diabetes doesn’t have to interfere with the ability to do a job.
Stand Up for Health: Not so long ago, the sight of a person standing at an office desk, instead of sitting, would have raised eyebrows. Now, there seems to be a legion of dedicated standers, and science may be on their side. Diabetes Forecast considers the evidence and offers six ways to sit less.
Additional exciting features and columns in the May 2013 issue of Diabetes Forecast include:
- “The Diabetes Belt”: How where you live may play a big role in your health.
- Feeling better with arthritis, which affects about half of people with diabetes.
- Broadway star Elaine Stritch reflects on her diabetes, on and off the stage.
- Smart snacks to help keep hunger in check, plus tips for smart snacking.
- How targeting body fat that’s more than skin deep may help treat insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
