The American Diabetes Association to Promote Health and Physical Activity to Latinos at the Nation’s Largest Latino Conference in New Orleans
The American Diabetes Association (Association), the nation’s leading voluntary health organization in the fight to Stop Diabetes® and its deadly consequences, will be participating in the 2013 National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Annual Conference at the Ernest N. Morial convention center in New Orleans, July 20 – 23. NCLR is the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States working to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans.
The Association will continue its tradition of bringing its Latino Initiative’s Por tu familia program to the NCLR conference. The program is designed to raise awareness in the Latino community about the seriousness of diabetes, its risk factors and warning signs through culturally relevant and easy-to-understand health education. Efforts focus on healthy eating, understanding the link between cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, and the importance and impact of increasing physical activity. In addition, the program encourages appropriate testing among those at risk and treatment for those diagnosed with diabetes.
At the Association’s booth, up to 1000 attendees will receive free blood glucose screenings performed by Walgreens on Saturday and Sunday from 10:30pm – 6:00pm and, Monday, July 22nd, from 10:00am – 3:00pm. Those found at risk will receive appropriate medical referrals. Other booth activities include learning how to Create Your Plate by experimenting with portion sizes, an opportunity to enroll in the free Living with Type 2 Diabetes Program and learn about the Association’s Advocacy programs designed to help those being treated unfairly at work, at school and in other parts of daily life because of their diabetes. In addition, participants will receive a variety of practical giveaways to help manage a healthier lifestyle, including free Frisbees, cutting-mats, aprons, pedometers, portion plates, reusable bags and bilingual health information for the entire family.
In collaboration with the Tulane University Culinary Medical program, the Association will provide conference participants with the opportunity to learn and participate in educational diabetes cooking demonstrations. The Association is also presenting, Move it! Shaping Policy that Promotes Physical Activity and Education in Schools workshop on July 21st from 9:00am – 10:30am. The workshop, in collaboration with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network and the American Heart Association, will address how quality physical education programs can improve our children’s health and performance in school.
