David G. Marrero, PhD, Receives American Diabetes Association's Distinguished Education Award

Marrero Presented with Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award

San Francisco, CA (June 9, 2008) -- The American Diabetes Association (ADA), the nation's leading voluntary health organization in the fight against diabetes, announced today that David G. Marrero, PhD, received the Association's prestigious Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award at the organization's 68th Scientific Sessions, which run through June 10, 2008.

The Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award is presented to an individual who demonstrates significant contributions to the understanding of diabetes education, spent many years of effort in the field, and has benefited recipients of education.

"On behalf of the American Diabetes Association, we are delighted to present this prestigious award to Dr. Marrero," said John Buse, MD, PhD, President, Medicine & Science, of the American Diabetes Association. “His work has helped move scientific advances obtained in clinical trials into the public health sector."

Dr. Marrero is the J.O. Ritchey Professor of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He is also the Director of the Diabetes Translational Research Center. Dr. Marrero helped design the Diabetes Prevention Program and the Translating Research Into Action for Diabetes (TRIAD) study, which evaluated strategies to improve diabetes care in managed settings. His research interests include strategies for promoting diabetes prevention, care settings, improving diabetes care practices used by primary care providers, and the use of technology to facilitate care and education. Dr. Marrero served as Associate Editor for ADA's Diabetes Care for five years. He is currently associate editor for ADA's Diabetes Forecast.
