About the Camp

The American Diabetes Association's Camp Freedom is a resident camp program for boys and girls ages 7 to 16. In 2016, 66% of our campers were past campers! In addition, about 70% of our counselors were return counselors or past campers. Camp Freedom is held at Camp Kweebec, which has been accredited by the American Camp Association for more than 40 years and located in Montgomery County, PA. Camp Freedom offers a wide range of activities, including swimming, sports, horseback riding, zip lining, arts and crafts, cooking, campfire activities and more!

The purpose of our camp is to provide a safe environment for children with diabetes to participate in traditional camping fun while meeting other kids like them and learn new ways to manage their diabetes. Our staff includes physicians, nurses, registered dietitians and counselors. For additional information, please read the camp brochure.

CIT Information

CIT Age: 17 (CITs must be 17 by start of camp)
CIT Fee: $350

The role of a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) is to assist counselors while working with younger campers. The CIT Program provides training for youth interested in working with kids, specifically as camp counselors, as they transition from camper to counselor. Participants are expected to interact thoughtfully and compassionately with younger campers; to commit to learning more about themselves, camp, and camp procedures; to be team members and to take on responsibility and leadership. CITs also have the opportunity to learn a basic understanding of diabetes and its care.

The primary goal of the CIT Program is to offer a fun and supportive experience that will develop confidence, commitment and community. The program focuses on helping youth become future leaders by developing communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. CITs will leave ready to become camp counselors.

Due to the competitive nature of the program, we only accept a limited number of applicants. The application requires two personal references, a medical reference, and short interview with camp staff. Space is limited for this position. Once accepted, CITs must attend pre-camp training in spring, as well as counselor training the day before Camp Freedom.

For more information on the CIT program, please contact Michelle Foster at mfoster@diabetes.org or 610-828-5003 ext. 4643.

**Only inquiries from CIT applicants will be responded to. Sorry, no parents!
