About the Chicago EXPO

History of the Chicago Diabetes EXPO

For more than 20 years, EXPO has brought over 75,000 healthcare providers, businesses, caregivers and people living with diabetes under one roof with the mutual goal to Stop Diabetes®. In 2003, the American Diabetes Association of Northern Illinois hosted its first EXPO at Navy Pier in Chicago. In its first year, the event attracted more than 4,000 attendees. Today EXPO is held at McCormick Place Lakeside Center and in 2013 we had a record-breaking attendance of over 11,000 community members!

The American Diabetes Association is seen as the foremost authority on diabetes and is the nation's leading non-profit organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Founded in 1940, our mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Nearly 30 million Americans have diabetes and 86 millions have prediabetes. In Illinois this translates to more than 1 million people living with diabetes.

By 2050, as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have type 2 diabetes, unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes! EXPO, a recognized education program of the American Diabetes Association, is held in 11 markets across the country. The Chicago EXPO contains highly interactive events that include professional speakers, access to health care providers, a variety of Association program and event information, exercise and cooking demonstrations and much more. EXPO serves a great cross section of the populations with type 1, type 2, prediabetes, those looking to prevent diabetes and caretakers of those living with diabetes.

In order to reach as many members of the community as possible, the American Diabetes Association widely publicizes and promotes this event through TV, radio, CTA ads, website ads and print outlets, as well as EXPO brochures and flyers within doctors' offices, hospitals, diabetes centers, community centers, churches, schools, retail outlets and individual consumers' mailboxes.

Features of the 2014 EXPO will include healthy cooking demonstrations with registered dietitians on hand to explain portion control, fat reduction and carbohydrate management, an "Ask the Expert" area with available healthcare professionals to answer questions regarding diabetes management, educational lectures throughout the day on several different stages, and health screenings that include: A1c hemoglobin testing, glucose testing, blood pressure screening, BMI testing, foot screenings and dental screenings.

With over 75 exhibitors located on the showroom floor, attendees can expect to learn about the latest products and services, diabetes management and prevention, prescription compliance, metabolic syndromes, healthy eating, proper exercise, watch how-to product demonstrations and receive free product giveaways. Find anything from engaging workshops targeted to the African American and Latino communities to live healthy cooking demonstrations from a celebrity chef at EXPO.
