Sierra Sandison, Miss Idaho 2014, made international headlines because of her decision to proudly wear her insulin pump while competing at Miss Idaho, and later, at Miss America. She posted a picture of herself and the pump during the swimsuit portion of the Miss Idaho Pageant. The photo quickly went viral, and helped Sierra launch the #showmeyourpump campaign, encouraging people with diabetes to post their own pictures, bravely showing off their insulin pumps, and other medical devices. Thousands of people with diabetes from the US, and in 35 other countries, shared images.
Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Chef Leticia discovered a love for her native Brazilian cuisine and passion for cooking at a very young age. However, it wasn't until 1997 that Chef Leticia decided to pursue a career in the culinary industry.
To shed light on a topic very close to her heart, Chef Leticia is partnering with Merck on Desafiando La Diabetes: Logra Tus Metas to educate others about the high prevalence of type 2 diabetes among the Hispanic population in the United States. She is helping to empower them to understand that including small, but important changes in their lifestyle can help them and reduce their risk for serious complications, including heart disease and stroke.
The most celebrated player to ever put on an Atlanta Hawks uniform, Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins is also the Hawks' Vice President of Basketball. Wilkins works in various management functions within the Hawks' basketball and business areas and is the team's analyst for the Hawks broadcast networks.
Dominique's passion extends beyond basketball. His true calling came from an unexpected diagnosis of type 2 diabetes at the age of 40—not long after he retired from the National Basketball Association (NBA). After losing his grandfather and father to diabetes, Wilkins decided early on that he was going to do everything possible to better manage his diabetes and encourage others to do the same.
