Main Stage Speaker Schedule

9:30 a.m. Peripheral Arterial Disease in Diabetics
Presented by Syed Z. Rizvi, MD.
Sponsored by Peripheral Vascular Associates.
Peripheral Arterial Disease in Diabetics largely remains silent and undetected. Neuropathy blunts pain perception making symptoms of arterial disease less common leading to later diagnosis with more severe lesions than in nondiabetics with patients often presenting with ulcers and critical limb ischemia and thus at higher risk of limb loss and disability. Presentation aims to overview biology and clinical manifestations of peripheral arterial disease in diabetes, discuss early detection and prevention by risk factor control and briefly review present day treatment modalities. -
10:30 a.m. Diabetes in 2013: What You Need to Know
Presented by Enrique Caballero, MD.
Sponsored by Takeda. -
11:30 a.m. Diabetic Nerve Pain: Why My Feet Hurt and New Ways to Make Them Feel Better
Presented by Christopher Vejil.
Sponsored by One Source Medical Group.
Diabetic nerve pain is a common complication of diabetes. People with diabetes can develop damage to their nerves, most commonly in their feet. This nerve damage can lead to numbness and pain. Treatment of this pain has centered on good control of blood glucose & the use of medications to provide relief from the pain. Within the past few years scientific studies have shown that the use of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation or TENS is effective for the treatment of diabetic nerve pain. Many TENS devices are inconvenient to use so that this therapy has not been widely adopted. Recently, better designed equipment has become available making this form of therapy an effective choice without the need for more medication. -
12:30 p.m. Know Your Rights: Fair Treatment for People Who Have Diabetes
Presented by Deirdre Murphy, Advocacy Chair.
Everyone who has diabetes deserves to be treated fairly. But, that does not always happen. Unfair treatment (or discrimination) against people who have diabetes may happen in many aspects of daily life. The American Diabetes Association offers information and guidance to those who may be affected. This presentation will offer general information about diabetes discrimination, including examples of where it may happen, how the American Diabetes Association has helped resolve some of these situations and how someone who is treated unfairly because of having diabetes may obtain help from the Association by calling 1-800-DIABETES.
