Research in Massachusetts

The American Diabetes Association's Research Program supports diabetes research aimed at preventing, treating, and curing diabetes. The diabetes research projects we support cover the spectrum from islet cell biology and transplantation techniques, to studies in education and behavioral science.

Association-funded discoveries have yielded inventions such as the portable insulin pump, produced new procedures like pancreas donor-cell transplantation and provided many new drugs that people with diabetes depend on.

  • Nearly 4,000 research projects funded since program inception
  • Over the life of the program, more than $550 million invested in diabetes research
  • We have provided funding for $33.55 million in 2009 and 2010.
  • More than 400 active Association-sponsored research projects at 140 institutions nationwide
  • Thanks to this research, key discoveries have been made that make life better for those living with diabetes
