Live Empowered - African American Initatives
Diabetes and African Americans
The Live Empowered program is the Association's targeted approach to increase awareness of the seriousness of diabetes within the African American community. The program provides the African American community with easy to implement tips and techniques on increasing physical activity and making healthy food choices. Churches have always serveed as the life center of the African American community; a natural gathering place for information sharing. The Association works closesly with churches nationwide to promote diabetes education and awareness.
African Americans are at high risk:
- More than 4 million African Americans have diabetes
- Alarming increase in African Americans with type 2 diabetes
- 1 in 4 African-American women over the of age 55 has diabetes
- African-Americans experience higher rates of diabetes complications/ have the highest heart disease rate
- In 2003, African-Americans were 1.5 times more likely to be obese
- It is estimated that approximately 1 in 2 African-American children born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime
Live Empowered is comprised of 5 different programs. The Chicago office offers four of these programs in the Northern Illinois area. They are:
Project Power - Faith-based diabetes awareness workshops including topics such as: managment, prevention and treatment (Power Over Diabetes), physical activity (Fit and Faithful), healthy eating (O'Taste & See), heart disease and health risk (A Clean Heart) and youth and diabetes (Train Up A Child)
ID Day - National day of action to Stop Diabetes
Your Diabetes Total Wellness Adult Toolikt - Holistic approach to diabetes education

"I Decide (ID) to Stop Diabetes" Day at Church - November 10, 2013
The American Diabetes Association needs YOU to participate in "I Decide (ID) to Stop Diabetes" Day. Today, nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes and another 79 million people have prediabetes. Sadly, diabetes is affecting our community at an even larger rate. If current trends continue, 1 in 3 Americans will have type 2 diabetes by 2050, the number increases to 1 in 2 for communities of color.
Pledge to Live Empowered! As a leader in your community, you have the ability to heighten awareness about this disease in your congregation. Across the country, more than 2,000 churches of various denominations will participate in "ID" Day on November 10. Locally, this event provides diabetes education to congregants, reaching more than 35,000 people each year.
Now that you know this, here’s how your church can help:
- Celebrate ID Day at Church on November 10th using the free educational materials provided by your American Diabetes Association.
- Host diabetes awareness activities leading up to or after ID Day at Church e.g. healthy meals and/or church work outs before or after church service.
- Add American Diabetes Month to your church calendar (November 2013) and encourage congregants to visit diabetesmosaic.org to help us build the true picture of diabetes!
The best part about participating in the campaign is you can tailor your awareness activities to meet the needs of your faith community!
We hope you join our nationwide celebration on November 10. Remember, just a moment of your time can help save a life.
