Por tu Familia
Por tu Familia is the signature program of the American Diabetes Association's Latino Initiative. It is a comprehensive, year round diabetes prevention education program developed for and targeted to Latinos. The program's components are community-based health awareness, outreach and education.
Community-based Health Awareness
- Power Over Diabetes: Focuses on creating awareness about diabetes, the management and treatment of the disease.
- Everybody Dance for your Health: Shows how physical activities can be fun.
- Everybody Move for your Health: Focuses on the benefits of physical activities.
- Flavor in the Latino Kitchen: A culinary community session created for Hispanics/Latinos with diabetes.
- Something to Smile About: Provides information on oral health for people with diabetes.
- Stay in Touch: Provides information to establish the link between diabetes and nerve damage.
- With Open Eyes: Provides information about people living with diabetes and those who are at risk for developing the disease.
- With All My Heart: is based on the ABCs of diabetes management.
Collaborating with a variety of Latino organizations, the Association seeks to inform and educate the Latino community about the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of regular exercise and eating healthy. Help us stop the current trends in diabetes that predict 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes by 2050, by becoming part of the solution and volunteering to become a Promotora. As a Promotora you will work directly with the Association's staff and committee to ensure a successful execution of the Por tu Familia program and inform your community about improving their health by hosting workshops.
Encourage your friends and family to become a part of health education by participating in a workshop in your neighborhood. Bilingual workshops are open to the public and are hosted in community centers, churches, hospitals or local clubs and organizations. To find a workshop near you, please contact M. Alexandra Santana at MSantana@diabetes.org or 312-346-1805 ext. 6603.

Community Outreach Events
Feria de Salud was held on October 12, 2013 at the Walgreens in Berwyn, IL. There were glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings, flu shots, cooking demonstrations and sampling, and games held throughout the day. Over 300 people joined us at our event.
For information on future events, please contact M. Alexandra Santana at email@example.com or 312-346-1805 ext. 6603.
Make an impact in your community by volunteering to help the Por tu Familia program. We are looking for bilingual volunteers who would be able to assist with local community events. To become a volunteer, please register online at www.diabetes.org/volunteer
