Indianapolis, Indiana

Diabetes is a serious problem, particularly in Indiana. It would be a difficult task to find someone who does not personally know an individual with diabetes.

Hoosiers are increasingly feeling the effects of this disease. More than 750,000 children and adults in Indiana suffer from all forms of diabetes, including type 1, type 2 and gestational. Approximately 1 in 4 of those who have diabetes does not know it. And at least 1.9 million Hoosiers are living with prediabetes, putting them at risk for type 2 diabetes in the future. Today, it is estimated that 1 in 3 children born after the year 2000 in the U.S. will develop diabetes.

Indiana Diabetes Prevention Network

The National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), led by the CDC, is offered to help people make necessary lifestyle changes. The program was designed and piloted in Indiana by the Indiana University School of Medicine, and has proven to prevent and/or delay type 2 diabetes. This program helped people cut their risk for diabetes in half!

In this year-long program, participants work with a trained "Lifestyle Coach" in a group-like setting to set personal goals, learn how to eat healthy, add daily physical activity, stay motivated, and problem solve issues that can get in the way of making healthy lifestyle changes.
