Utahns are increasingly feeling the effects of diabetes as thousands of people suffer from the disease, and many others may have diabetes and not know it! It is estimated that one out of every three children born after 2000 in the United States will be directly affected by diabetes.
That is why the American Diabetes Association's Salt Lake City office is so committed to educating the public about how to stop diabetes and support those living with the disease.
We are here to help.
Upcoming Events
Father of the Year
May 21, 2013
Little America Hotel, Salt Lake City, UT
The Utah Father's Day Council is proud to announce our annual Father of the Year Awards. Each year, the Father's Day Council honors fathers who have demonstrated the ability to balance their personal lives, serve as role models for their children and help make a positive difference in their communities.
The Father of the Year honorees raise crucial funds to help support the advocacy, research and education initiatives of the American Diabetes Association. These funds help the American Diabetes Association to fulfill its mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
For more information, contact Jeff Bird at 801-363-3024 ext. 7070 or jbird@diabetes.org.
Utah Tour de Cure®
June 8, 2013
Rees Pioneer Park, Brigham City, UT
Take the challenge and get ready to Take the Ride of Your Life! The sense of accomplishment that you'll feel as you cross the finish line can only be matched by the difference you'll be making in the lives of the 165,000 Utahns that are living with diabetes.
Tour de Cure offers routes ranging from an easy family ride of one mile to a much more challenging route of 100 miles, with several options in between. The routes go past the Bear River Bird Refuge and scenic Box Elder County. Cyclists at all levels of expertise will participate in the Tour de Cure for the stimulating competition, camaraderie and physical challenge, but the real reward comes in knowing that every mile we ride and every dollar we raise brings us that much closer to stopping this disease that affects nearly 26 million Americans.
For more information, contact Dustin Stark at 801-363-3024 ext. 7071 or dstark@diabetes.org.
Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes®
September 7, 2013
Liberty Park
Step Out is the American Diabetes Association’s signature one-day, fundraising and awareness walk and run taking place in cities across the United States. Step Out helps raise money to find a cure for the nearly 26 million American children and adults living with diabetes.
Participants can join the movement by registering and recruiting co-workers, friends and family members to walk and raise money. The day of the event is a party to celebrate the fundraising accomplishments of teams and individuals as well as an opportunity to promote awareness of the seriousness of diabetes in the local community.
This year’s Step Out event will include both a 5K walk and a 5K fun run. This event will be a family and pet friendly day filled with fun, exercise, and most importantly, a combined community effort to fight diabetes. There will be light refreshments, live entertainment, free health screenings and a Kids Zone with face painting and youth activities.
For more information on creating a team and/or sponsorship, contact Melissa Baucom at 801-363-3024 ext. 7076 or mbaucom@diabetes.org.
Local Support
Family Link
No one should have to face diabetes alone. Family Link is a volunteer-led program that makes it possible for families of children with diabetes to meet one another and receive the information and support they need to manage diabetes as a family.
Through this program, we provide information and services including advocacy, education and social events to families living with diabetes throughout the area.
Learn more about our schedule of events for Family Link.
If you are interested in participating in any of our Family Link events or are looking for more information, please contact Beverly Bartel at 801-363-3024 ext. 7072 or bbartel@diabetes.org.
Resources
The American Diabetes Association fully understands that diabetes is an expensive disease to manage, with the costs of testing supplies plus medication. The Utah Office knows of several resources to offset these expenses:
- 1-800-DIABETES – For help with specific topics in English or Spanish, we offer a support line of 1-800-DIABETES.
- Utah Resources for the Uninsured – Learn more about Medication Assistance Programs and Low Cost Clinics.
For other questions about community resources, please contact Beverly Bartel at 801-363-3024 ext. 7072.
