Volunteers for Por tu familia Advisory Committee
The San Francisco Bay Area office of the American Diabetes Association is looking for volunteers to serve on our Volunteer Leadership Advisory Committee for the Association’s Latino Initiative Por tu familia (for the family).
The purpose of the Por tu familia Leadership Advisory Committee is to put a human face on the Association’s mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Volunteers share their personal experiences to help motivate and recruit members of the community to become involved in our efforts to Stop Diabetes. They will also work hand in hand with Association staff to create awareness about the work of the Association.
Diabetes is an urgent health problem in the Latino community. Their rates of diabetes are almost double those of non-Latino whites. Getting information to the community about the seriousness of diabetes, its risk factors and those who may be at risk, and ways to help manage the disease is essential.
The Leadership Advisory Committee responsibilities could include but are not limited to:
- Assist with the development of goals, objectives, and strategic direction for the Association’s Latino Initiative in San Francisco & Alameda counties - monitor and evaluate progress of the same;
- Work closely with the Association Community Initiatives staff to coordinate the implementation of diabetes education workshops in the local Latino community;
- Promote participation in advocacy activities addressing the needs of the Latino community; and
- Provide feedback and recommendations regarding potential partnership opportunities with community-based organizations and clinics currently serving the local Latino community.
The benefits of this program are tremendous for all involved. Volunteers have the opportunity to motivate friends, family and members of the community to join in the fight for a cure for diabetes. If you, or someone you know, are interested in serving on the Volunteer Leadership Advisory Committee please contact Ka’Ryn Holder Jackson at (510) 654-4499 x7542 or at kholder@diabetes.org.
