Illinoisans are increasingly feeling the effects of diabetes as an estimated 800,000 suffer from the disease and as many as 500,000 have diabetes and don't yet know it! If current trends continue, one out of every three children born after the year 2000 in the United States will be diagnosed with some form of diabetes in their lifetime.
That is why the American Diabetes Association's Springfield office is so committed to educating the public about how to stop diabetes and support those living with the disease.
We are here to help.
The vision of the American Diabetes Association is a life free of diabetes and all of its burdens. Raising awareness of this ever-growing disease is one of the main efforts behind the mission of the Association. American Diabetes Month® (ADM) is an important element in this effort, with programs designed to focus the nation's attention on the issues surrounding diabetes and the many people who are impacted by the disease.
Here are just a few of the recent statistics on diabetes:
- Nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.
- Another 79 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
- The American Diabetes Association estimates that the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is $245 billion.
American Diabetes Month takes place each November and is a time to come together as a community to Stop Diabetes®!
Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes®
The American Diabetes Association held their Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes events in 3 locations this year around the Greater Illinois Area. Bloomington, Champaign and Springfield all played gracious hosts to the American Diabetes Association, and the events were a day of family fun and diabetes awareness.
Combined they raised over $130,000 and had over 900 walkers. We truly appreciated all of our participants, volunteers, sponsors and anyone else who came out and made the day a success! Please check out our pictures from our events our Facebookpage.
Congratulations to our top Fundraising Teams!
- Bloomington: Team Free Living and Team Papa Jay
- Champaign: AFSI and Marty's Army
- Springfield: Novo Nordisk and Team High Stride
Thank you to everyone who came out this year! We hope to see you next year!

2014 Kiss A Pig Gala
The Kiss-A-Pig fundraiser is an exclusive event of the American Diabetes Association. It is a humorous, zany and outrageous contest between local celebrities, community leaders, and business people. The purpose of the contest is to raise "votes/dollars" for candidates' campaigns. Each vote is equal to one dollar. The candidate with the most "votes/dollars" wins the privilege of kissing a live pig. The Kiss-A-Pig Gala will benefit diabetes research, education, support and programs such as Camp Granada, our summer camp for children with diabetes in Monticello, IL.
For more information, sponsorships, tickets or donations please contact Vanessa Wiseman at firstname.lastname@example.org or 217-875-9011 ext. 6642.
Camp gives children with diabetes the unique opportunity to better manage their disease and build friendships with other children with diabetes, while enjoying a variety of recreational activities in a safe, supportive environment. Full medical teams are on staff to ensure the health and safety of kids during their Camp adventures.
Please visit our camp website for more information.
