Family Link Greater Illinois
Learning to live with diabetes doesn't happen overnight – and you don't have to do it alone.
That's why the American Diabetes Association's Family Link program is here for your family when you need us most – every day.
In the Greater Illinois area, we offer a number of social and support programs for families, including:
Parent Mentor Network
The Parent Mentor Network offers the chance for newly diagnosed families, families going through transition, or families new to the Association and our programs, to interact with other families living with diabetes. If you are interested in joining the Parent Mentor Network - either as a mentor or as someone in need of assistance - please contact us at ADAGreaterIL@diabetes.org.
Safe at School
The Safe at School program is a nation-wide program committed to the ongoing fairness, protection and safety of school children with diabetes.
We realize it takes a team effort to meet the needs of children who are diagnosed with diabetes, which is why we are devoted to establishing strong connections between families, schools, and healthcare providers.
Our Safe at School Campaign works to ensure that all children with diabetes are medically safe at school and that they have the same educational opportunities as their classmates.
If you need help with a school diabetes care problem, call 1-800-DIABETES (800-342-2383) for free resources and to speak to an Association legal advocate.
Back to school can be an anxiety filled period of time for many families living with diabetes, but it does not have to be. The Association holds Safe at School workshops and webinars to empower families to understand the rights of their child with diabetes in the school setting. We also encourage clinicians and school personnel to attend as a resource to families. This is a free program with childcare provided for infants to 12 years of age.
For questions about future webinars or if you would like to help plan one in your area, please contact Katherine Darneille 217-875-9011 ext. 6640 or ADAGreaterIL@diabetes.org.
Each year we host a one-week residential camp in July for nearly 160 children with diabetes ages 8 to 16 at Camp Granada in Monticello, IL. Please visit www.diabetes.org/camps for more information.
