Stop Diabetes @ Work

Stop Diabetes @ Work

Stop Diabetes @ WorkDiabetes is a leading cause of heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and amputation. It also leads to more sick days and less productivity on the job.

The good news is, type 2 diabetes can be prevented, and it isn’t as hard as you might think. Losing just 7% of your body weight (which translates to 15 pounds if you weigh 200 pounds) and exercising moderately (like brisk walking) 5 days a week can reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes by 58%. Lifestyle changes also can prevent or delay diabetes complications.

The Stop Diabetes @ Work initiative can help you and your colleagues take charge of your health and reduce your risk for this growing epidemic. Employers, contact us today if you'd like to learn more about Stop Diabetes @ Work.

This healthy worksite program provides:

1) Online Employer Portal
Employers will have access to a password-protected portal with resources to share with your staff including:

  • Handouts that can be co-branded
  • Newsletter articles and recipes to communicate healthy lifestyle messages on a monthly basis
  • Online and paper tools to track progress
  • Facts to help make the business case for worksite wellness
  • Resources to integrate health into the corporate culture

2) Online Employee Portal
Employees will have access to a co-branded webpage that will provide seasonal materials to help them learn about healthy lifestyles and track their successes.

3) Evidenced-Based Program
Employers will be asked to complete a survey about their current workplace wellness resources, what future resources they feel could improve the health of their employees, and what outcomes they would like to see as a result of an enhanced wellness program.

Employees will be asked to complete a survey about their health needs, the specific wellness activities and materials they believe they would utilize, and what they feel could help them reach their individual health goals.  Results from these surveys are confidential.  Individual employee data will not be shared with employers.

Findings will be used to develop evidenced-based programs for your workplace.

4) Local American Diabetes Association Resources
You can work with your local American Diabetes Association to develop an evidenced-based healthy worksite program that will meet the needs of your employees.

In addition, you can work with your local American Diabetes Association on team-building activities that take place in your community.  By participating in one of the Association’s signature events, Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes or Tour de Cure, you can reinforce the physical activity components in this program and be recognized in your community as a company who is dedicated to wellness.
