Termination

If you have been terminated from a job because of diabetes – or even if you suspect but aren’t sure that the reason was because of diabetes – it’s important to understand your rights and the legal processes available to you to address the discrimination.

Step One

First, take a deep breath and allow yourself a few days to digest this change. When you are ready to talk about what happened, contact us so that you can receive information about diabetes discrimination and talk to a Legal Advocate about what to do next.

The sooner you contact us, the sooner we can help you understand your options and navigate through the process.

Step Two

Second, contact your state’s unemployment office and sign up to receive unemployment benefits.  Understand the unemployment benefits available to you in your state and what you need to do to receive them.

Step Three

Finally, know that you are not alone in this experience.  Others have faced the same or similar situation and have prevailed against discrimination.

To read the Association’s clinical practice recommendation on employment of people with diabetes, see the position statement Diabetes and Employment.
