New Jersey Protects Students Facing Diabetes Emergencies
Safe at School legislation, which took effect on January 29, 2010, requires schools to take action to ensure that students with diabetes are able to manage their disease and have access to needed assistance while at school and at school-related activities.
One key component of the law enables school staff such as teachers, coaches, and others to be trained to administer glucagon in emergencies when a school nurse is not available.
The new law also allows students who are able to do so to independently manage their diabetes when and where needed. Similar to the Florida law, the New Jersey statute provides that a student’s school choice shall not be restricted due to the fact that he or she has diabetes.
The text of the statute and a variety of materials to promote compliance with the law (developed with the help of the Association and other stakeholders) are available on the New Jersey Department of Education's website.
